A Hurting Mother Needs You

Guest Author: Daniel Courington

“#shoutyourabortion” It’s been making headlines the last few days. It’s a rallying cry. It’s a cry encouraging mothers to be proud of aborting their unborn child. It’s a hashtag that you could not have gone without seeing unless you were completely absent of social media in your life (and if you are-good for you).

Christians are responding. They are frustrated. They want to help the unborn children who have been being removed from our society at an alarming rate since the 1970’s (In all honesty, any rate is alarming for those of us who believe life is a gift from an eternal God). Most Christians just don’t know what to do so many of us lash out in anger.

I will continue to object and make it clear that I believe abortion is an abomination and a perversion of the plan of Jesus (John 10:10) but let me remind us that we cannot bring back one aborted baby. They are in the hands of a merciful and caring God. They are safely in the bosom of Abraham.

So what can we do? Let us reach out to those who are hurting. Millions of those who have chosen abortion for their child are hurting because they live in regret and feel they have nowhere to turn. I’m sure many would love to turn to Christians because of the hope that we have but because of the hateful way that Christians sometimes attack- they feel that they could find no understanding here. It's too long that we have advocated for the unborn child while ignoring the hurting mother. Let's be a friend to both.

Let me encourage you to do two simple things:

  1. Speak with love to those with whom you disagree (Ephesians 4:15).  Some will never agree with you but if you lash out with anger and name calling- most will never even hear you. I know I’ve been guilty to become frustrated and lash out about such issues but wonder if I would have replaced that indignation with hope every time if I could have made an impact in someone’s life.
  2. Offer a helping hand to the hurting. Let them know about the hope that is found in Jesus. Let them know that only God’s Grace can reunite them with their unborn child. Too often we have cried sinner without following it with savior. Let us help them to know that you are bringing hope to their despair- A dawn to their darkness. After all, a hurting mother needs you.
