Your Minister Deserves a Raise

Guest Author: Scott Bond Your minister deserves a raise. Really. This brief 500-word post is a short explanation of why ministers can't get hurt, retire, or die. In short, their families can't afford it.

Your minister deserves a raise...

Statistics. In a recent survey, 93.5% of ministers have no retirement provided by their employer. No IRA. No annuity. No long-term savings plan. 96.4% have no life insurance plan offered. And 0 out of 57 ministers have disability protection in case of serious injury or illness.

Stories. Those stats are backed by real stories of how ministry families struggled when the "breadwinner" was disabled, died, or didn't have any money to retire.  Being forced out of the "preacher's house" or being forced into secular work, experience tells us despite good intentions, the majority of employers have not provided well for the man in the pulpit.

Scripture. Each minister of the gospel bears marks of the cross. And most won't complain or grumble. They humbly submit and count suffering as joy to share it with Christ. Financial problems are part of that decision to  "leave the boats and nets to follow Jesus." But Scripture seems to say that if a man is willing to pursue ministry, the church should free him financially (as one unmuzzles an ox), and support his family. The worker deserves his wages.

"Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.” - 1 Timothy 5:17-18

Solutions. While life's ultimate goal is not of this world or pursuit of wealth, men in ministry do have financial responsibility along the way. Most servants in ministry aren't seeking a mega-church or a mega-paycheck, but they do have God-given responsiblities to provide for their family, nourish their spouse, and to leave an inheritance for their children.

Out of this great need, the PREACHING BENEFITS program was developed to help churches care for their ministers and protect their families through.

  • LIFE INSURANCE - support when the minister dies
  • DISABILITY PROTECTION - support when the minister is disabled
  • RETIREMENT PLAN - support when the minister decides to step down

With employment packages that supplement income, employers can fund a stable future for ministers through individual life insurance, disability protection, and retirement plans.

That's right. All of these products can be funded and paid for by the employer, which means no additional cost to the minister and his family. These are additional benefits that a church can add to the salary they are already providing their staff.

Ministry is no minimum wage calling.  Let's be faithful to well support the greatest work on earth. Your minister deserves a raise. Find more information at
